Orange County Bus Pepper Spray

March 13, 2018 - Horizon West, Florida

At 8:20 am approximately 40 elementary students from the Horizon West area on their way to Independence Elementary were evacuated from their bus following a incident involving pepper spray. Horizon West is located in west Orange County, directly behind the Magic Kingdom and is where many Disney workers live. According to my daughter, a girl student brought the pepper spray to school and was showing the other kids when a boy student grabbed the bottle and started spraying the pepper spray throughout the bus. The students complained they could not breath and the bus driver immediately pulled the bus over along Summerlake Blvd and emergency personnel were called to the scene. A portion of Summerlake Blvd between Fiquette Road and Siedel Road was closed for approximately 2 hours.

According to Orange County Fire Department personnel, the pepper spray used was a consumer grade vegetable based spray and would not cause any long term problems. Students complaining of burning were evaluated by medical personnel from Orange County Fire Department. No serious injuries were reported.

Student backpacks were searched by OCFD and were bagged in plastic bags to keep any further contamination from the pepper spray. Students' hands were cleaned with hand sanitizer and a recommendation to wash clothes and backpacks.

Students were released to parents on the scene at approximately 9:30 am. The rest of the students were loaded onto a different bus and transported to school.
